Montreal City Directories

According to his obituary, my great-grandfather left the family farm near Port Perry, Ontario, Canada at age 17 (1868) and went to Montreal where he learned the cabinet making trade. Might he have lived with any of the people below?

William Porteous (whose details are highlighted in light yellow) later moved to Stratford, Ontario. So did my great-grandfather and his youngest brother. Even later, William moved to Manitoba, near the Saskatchewan border. My grandfather moved to the Weyburn area in 1902 and some of William's sons lived in nearby Carlyle.

My great-grandfather might have apprenticed to George Frederick Porteous, a cooper (highlighted in light blue). George and his family appeared in the 1881 census in New Brunswick; one of George F.'s sons, Frederick George, moved to Victoria, BC where he later died of Bright's disease in 1917. My own grandfather moved the family to BC from Saskatchewan in 1936...

My great-grandfather was born in Reach Township, Ontario County, Ontario, Canada as were most of his siblings. His parents were George Porteous (born in Elvington, Yorkshire, England in 1818) and Margaret Stewart (born ca. 1823 somewhere in the United States). The year was 1851. George became a cabinet maker, marrying Margaret ("Maggie") Reid in Toronto in 1874. The marriage registration indicates that he worked as a telegraph operator (possibly employed by the Montreal or Dominion Telegraph Company), although the bulk of the information I have suggests that he worked as a cabinet maker and furniture designer for most of his life. George and Maggie spent the first year of their married life at the home of Maggie's mother, Isabella (Harrison) Reid at 50 Nelson Street. Previously, the Reid family had lived on the southeast corner of Elm and Elizabeth Streets in a neighbourhood known as the Ward. Joseph Reid

Joseph Reid was my grandfather's maternal grandfather. The following chart shows where he fits into the family tree. Note - Joseph's wife's first name has been recorded as both Isabella and Bell Ann:  From Landmarks of Toronto, Page 185, Volume unknown: In May of 2006, I located an obituary for Isabella (née HARRISON) REID, which appeared in the Sarnia Observer on January 19, 1900. Isabella was living with the family of her daughter Josephine and her son-in-law, Francis James CLEMENT in Point Edward, Ontario: "In Sarnia, January 17th 1900 Isabella A. Reid, relict of the late Joseph Reid, Col. Sergt. of H.M. 77th Regiment at the age of 77 years." There was a military reference to Joseph; it kindled my interest in his background, which suddenly became more interesting with the new information. Cornelius Porteous

Cornelius Porteous Introduction Several years ago, I came across an online reference for a Cornelius Porteous through a search at  www.ingeneas.com . I subsequently ordered the relevant document from the National Archives of Canada. The name 'Cornelius' is relatively rare, and certainly more so in conjunction with the 'Porteous' surname. What tweaked my interest is that the document showed that Cornelius was from Yorkshire and I already knew of a Cornelius Porteous of Dunnington, Yorkshire, the same village where I believe my ggg-grandfather, George Porteous, was born. There is a good possibility that George and Cornelius were brothers. There is some chance that the Cornelius Porteous who was born 4-Mar-1811 in Osbaldwick (see below) did not emigrate with his family to Canada. There are two marriages of a Cornelius Porteous that I am following up on, and I have also located a death index entry on FreeBMD that may be for him. I'm also repeating a birth entry for Corn
